He would go the long way home- and because it seemed unlikely he would be travelling this way again, he decided to look up old friends and haunts and to visit some places he had missed before. From the Buddhist temples and geisha houses o Japan to the hot, fish-infested shores of the Red Sea, he makes his leisurely way by train and boat and bus and plane, visiting most of the obvious tourist spots on his route, yet finding time for trips up occasional backwater. Llewellyn is always conscious of the splendour of the past as he treads the ancient pilgrim routes. Yet he is aware too if the rapid changes in the democratised East through which he is travelling , whether they take the form of a new ferry terminal in Hong Kong or retired tea planters bemoaning the good old days in India.
